Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi
In a tale of revenge, lust, and innocence betrayed, the libertine Duke of Mantua seduces the sheltered Gilda, daughter of his own sarcastic court jester Rigoletto, and a father's protective love turns to a bitter thirst for vengeance.
Richard Buckley conducts; cast includes Russell Thomas, Philip Joll, Peter Volpe, and Lisette Oropesa.
Sung in Italian.
November 14, 2009
The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan
Stephanie Blythe returns to Arizona Opera in the 'style japonais' universe only Gilbert and Sullivan could have imagined -- a sparkling and lavish comedy written at the height of their creative genius. Filled with charming and absurd characters whose antics reflect the social milieu and mores of 19th-century England, this popular operetta is sure to amuse and entertain.
Joel Revzen conducts; cast includes Patrick Miller, Corey McKern, Daniel Sumegi, Neal Davies, Anne-Carolyn Bird, Tamara Mesic, Olga Perez, Stephanie Blythe, and Curt Olds.
Sung in English.
November 21, 2009
L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti
Love triumphs with the aid of a willing heart and a "magic potion". Donizetti's opera is sure to win hearts just as Nemorino wins his lady's favor through the magic of music. Critically acclaimed bass Donato DiStefano assumes the role of the traveling salesman, adding spice and hilarity to this comic story of true love.
Joseph Rescigno conducts; cast includes Tammi Huber, Barry Banks, Dina Kuznetsova, Hugh Russell, and Donato DiStefano.
Sung in Italian.
November 28, 2009
Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Mozart's terrifying cautionary tale sends the rakish Don Giovanni to his just reward. Favorite arias include the deceptively tender "La ci darem la mano."
Joel Revzen conducts; cast includes Robert Gierlach, Twyla Robinson, Andrew Gangestad, Kurt Link, Jonatahn Boyd, Deborah Raymond, Sari Gruber, and John Fulton.
Sung in Italian.
December 5, 2009
