The Phoenix Chorale, formerly the Phoenix Bach Choir, has been nominated for four GRAMMY Awards. The Chorale’s album Spotless Rose: Hymns to the Virgin Mary is next week’s KBAQ CD of the Week…it was nominated for Best Classical Album and Best Small Ensemble, while the group’s joint recording with the Kansas City Chorale, a past KBAQ CD of the Week featuring the sacred choral works of Josef Rheinberger, was nominated for Best Choral Performance and Best Surround Sound Album. Both recordings are on the Chandos label with Artistic Director Charles Bruffy. The 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards will be announced February 8, 2009. Listen to KBAQ next Sunday at noon for selections from Spotless Rose. (more information at www.phoenixchorale.org -- see link below)

Last week Google announced a project called the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, designed to promote online communities and bolster classical music on the company’s video-sharing website. With online instruction from London Symphony musicians, the site’s users will record themselves performing a four-minute orchestral work by composer Tan Dun, and the winning parts will be combined into a final YouTube presentation. Musicians will also upload auditions for a jury of professionals from the Berlin Philharmonic and other major orchestras. Those finalists will perform at Carnegie Hall in an April 2009 concert conducted by San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas. (more information at www.youtube.com/symphony)

Beginning in January, Arizona opera lovers will be able to enjoy this season of Metropolitan Opera high-definition transmissions not only in movie theaters but also with the convenience of television. Arizona PBS, KAET TV channel 8, will re-broadcast this series, recorded live during Saturday matinee performances at the Met, starting with Doctor Atomic by John Adams on January 4th, followed by Richard Strauss’s Salome on January 18th and Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust in February. These Met television broadcasts will begin at ten o’clock on specific Sunday mornings. Visit our website for the latest schedule of live transmissions and re-broadcasts of opera events at KBAQ.org.
