( Phoenix, AZ )
•Daniel Pinkham Dead at 83
•Bernard Haitink named Musician of the Year
•Israel Philharmonic celebrates 70th
It's KBAQ's "This week in classical music" -- an update on what's happening in the classical music world... I'm Randy Kinkel.
Composer Daniel Pinkham has died. A teacher at the New England Conservatory since the 1950s, was also the music director at King's Chapel until 2000 when he retired and was named music director emeritus. Many of Pinkham's hymns and anthems sung around the world were first performed in Boston, and a Sunday night music series at the church celebrates it's 50th anniversary next year. The church's current music director, Heinrich Christiansen, said, "He really was a force of nature. He didn't seem to have a nany regrets. He led a rich life and leaves an enormous legacy.
Bernard Haitink has just received another award. The Musical America International Directory of the Performing Arts recently named the Dutch Conductor and recently appointed Chicago Symphony Principal Conductor as "Musician of the Year" in a recent ceremony. Haitink Joked, "I don't climb into jets easily... but when they told me I had to be here or not get the award, vanity told me I had to be here!"
The Israel Philharmonic celebrates it's 70th anniversary this year. Gala celebrations in Israel this month feature visitors such as Daniel Barenboim, Valery Gergiev, and Maxim Vengerov. It's one of the hardest-working orchestras in the business, with 26,000 subscribers and repeating programs up to six times in different cities, and spending about 60 days a year touring abroad.
For more information on these and other items and events, go to the KBAQ website at KBAQ.org... be listening every week at this time for another update, and join me at noon every weekday for the Mozart Buffet, an hour of music by Mozart and his contemporaries. I'm Randy Kinkel, for KBAQ's "This week in Classical Music" on 89.5 KBAQ Phoenix, a service of Rio Salado College and Arizona State University.
