It’s KBAQ’s “This week in classical music” --- an update on what’s happening in the classical music world… I’m Randy Kinkel.
An Indiana University music professor has received one of France’s highest cultural honors. Pianist and IU music professor and beaux arts trio founder Menachem Pressler was named a commander in France’s order of Arts and letters, which was established in 1957 to recognize those who have contributed to furthering the arts in france and throughout the world. Pressler said, “It honors me, it honors my university, which I love!” Pressler’s been at IU since 1955.
A stradivarius violin made in the late 17th century has sold for just over 2 million dollars, the most ever paid for a musical instrument at auction, according to Christie’s auction house. The winning bid was from an anonymous private American Collector last week.
Canadian-born composer and arranger Robert Farnon has died. Farnon is remembered as one of the greatest composers of light orchestral music of his era and also wrote music for over 40 films. He won a grammy in 1995.
Tenor Placido Domingo hopes to take on a new role before he retires—that of a baritone—Domingo wants to try singing the title role in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra sometime in the future. The singer made the announcement during the intermission of last week’s Metropolitan Opera Broadcast.
