July 2011 News by Jane Hilton - Valley Hangouts

All of us at KBAQ love to share suggestions for our favorite local food and drink spots… and we also love to receive them! We recently quizzed several Valley musicians about their top haunts, and we couldn’t resist passing on their great ideas!
“Some of the sopranos and altos get together at Cibo’s before rehearsals. We love their fantastic appetizers, cheese plates, and pizza. Oh, and the great wine (not that we drink before rehearsal). The owners are very friendly and the atmosphere is great.”
- Laura Inman, soprano, Phoenix Chorale
“Phoenix Symphony and Downtown Chamber Series musicians can often be found after our concerts across the street at Majerles, as well as at The Lost Leaf and Carly's Bistro. Bars with kitchens open late are a major perk, and Carly's is the most affordable on a musician budget.”
- Mark Dix, Phoenix Symphony Violist and founder of Downtown Chamber Series
“I like to go to St. Francis after rehearsals and concerts - I love the food and ambiance. My favorite entrée is the Roasted Salmon Superfood with red quinoa, avocado, soy beans, radish and sweet chili vinaigrette. I get it every time I go there!”
- Charles Bruffy, Artistic Director of the Phoenix Chorale
“I like to go to Pita Jungle before rehearsals for the wonderful (and inexpensive!) tapas selections during happy hour. I also really like their hummus trio with grilled sirloin.”
- Joel Rinsema, Executive Director and Tenor, Phoenix Chorale
“A lot of people like to go to Four Peaks for their tasty food and drinks after concerts, recitals, good rehearsals, anything that warrants celebration. Casey Moore's is another place with a good selection, and it's within walking distance from the School of Music."
-Austen Mack, percussionist, Arizona State University
“At the conclusion of most jazz performances at Arizona State University, the jazz department enjoys hanging out at Boston's Pizza on University. Since I began my experience at ASU in 2007, Boston's has been a regular post-performance hang out spot. Today, Boston's has become a spot for my groups to perform, combining the regular hang with a performance atmosphere.”
- Jeremy Lappitt, saxophone, Arizona State University
“"Four Peaks is the singers' hangout without a doubt. It's a perfect space for us, because we can be as loud and dramatic as we want without fear of being thrown out!"
- Allison Stanford, soprano, Arizona State University
